话别美国友人戴维先生 余建忠 2012年10月于昆明世博园
和蔼可亲、令人尊敬，已经为云大附中和云大外语学校工作了二十一年，已八十五岁高龄的美国外教戴维先生最后一次来到昆明，云大附中高云飞校长组织了一次与戴维先生的话别会，参加者有戴维（David Knapp）、霍斯特（John Holst）余建忠、王菊英、高云飞、陈克清、蒋家驹、张继文、赵毅、王蔷、王幼明、刘耘、雷彤云、孙澄、毕劲梅、武勤、张家麟等老师，因记。
二十一年前的一个清晨，
第一次见到了你的微笑。
银发碧眼、颧骨高高，
身背着一个大大的挎包。
大洋彼岸的睿智长者，
就这样走进了我们学校。
美国大学资深的退休校长，
从此成为我们的“外教”。
二十一年的风风雨雨，
二十一年的奔走操劳。
你辛勤地浇灌着中国的幼苗，
传递着美国人民的善良友好。
经过你一次次的不懈努力，
联通了双方来往的渠道。
你用你那瘦弱的身躯，
撑起了一座中美友谊之桥。
很多届学生直接聆听过你的讲课，
一批批学生得以赴美深造。
不少老师因此来到了美利坚，
拜访过美丽的锡特卡海岛。
你热爱中国的学生，
心里始终装着附中和“外校”。
尽管岁月一年年逝去，
你的热情从未减少。
作为一位优秀的教师，
你得到了师生的尊重和赞扬；
作为一位中美友好的使者，
你的事迹登上了春城晚报。
是的，随着岁月的流逝，
你已经渐渐地衰老；
八十五岁的高龄，
不能再承受长途飞行的辛劳。
谢谢您，可敬可爱的戴维，
我们忘不了你为我们做过的一切；
尤其忘不了的
是你那永远亲切和善的微笑。

Farewell to our American friend, Mr. David Knapp

Amiable and respectable, our 85-year-old former foreign teacher, Mr. David Knapp, who has been working for Yunnan University Secondary School (YUSS) and Yunnan University Foreign Language School for 21 years, visited Kunming probably for the last time. Principal Gao Yunfei organized a banquet to welcome and thank Mr. Knapp and the successor of his exchange program between YUSS and Mount Edgecumbe High School (MEHS), Mr. John Holst. Fifteen teachers from YUSS were present. Thus I recorded it with a poem.
The morning twenty-one years ago,
my eyes set upon your smile.
Grey hair, blue eyes, high cheekbones,
you carried a large backpack.
The resourceful elder from across the Pacific
came to our school just like this.
A veteran American university president
became our foreign teacher just like this.
With the hardships of twenty-one years,
With the toils of twenty-one years,
you’ve nurtured the Chinese young students,
conveying the kindness and friendliness of American people.
With the continuing effort,
you have connected a channel for our exchanges.
Thin as you were,
you have constructed a bridge of Sino-US friendship.
Many of our students have been in your classes;
Some have studied in America owing to you.
Our teachers have also benefited;
They visited you on the beautiful Sitka Island.
You adore Chinese students,
with the two schools dwelling in your heart.
Your devotion has never lessened,
as the years went by.
As an outstanding teacher,
you have earned our respect and praise.
As a goodwill envoy,
your story was printed in the Spring City Evening.
Yes, after all these years,
you are getting old.
At the age of eighty-five,
you can no longer withstand long flights.
Thank you, respected and lovable David!
We can never forget all you have done for us,
especially,
the gentle, warm smile you always wear.
